About the Character

Number VI, Zexion, is one of Organization XIII's founding members. Zexion is cold and calculating, wielding the power of illusion and his brilliant mind; he can easily manipulate enemies and allies alike. His weapon, called the Lexicon, is a book which he uses to summon powerful magic and illusions or capture his foe within its pages, sending them to a dimension of his dominion. Zexion has slate-colored hair that covers the right half his face, leaving only one of his dark cerulean eyes to be seen and sports the Organization’s signature coat. He was the youngest of Ansem the Wise’s six apprentices. When he was still his somebody, Ienzo, he convinced his master to further the research and experimentation of the heart in hopes of fully understanding the power of darkness that lies within. An ambition would inevitably bring on the demise of many worlds and themselves. He is fully devoted to the Organization’s cause, taking all the missions and tasks received seriously and leaving no room for play. Zexion relies on strength of the mind; the thought of dirtying his own hands as opposed to having a pawn to do it for him is preposterous. He prefers to pull the strings from the shadows, preventing others from knowing the workings of his mind. True to his nature and power, Zexion’s title is The Cloaked Schemer.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

Minor Character

Zexion serves as one of the main antagonists in Riku’s story in the game. Originally sent to Castle Oblivion alongside Vexen and Lexaus to monitor the suspicious behavior of fellow members Marluxia and Larxene, they make their central headquarters in the basement of the castle. He laments over the growing division of the once united Organization, disappointed but accepting of what it has come to. However, the sudden arrival of someone with a “scent” similar to that of the Superior piques his interest.

He soon identifies the newest guest as Riku, whose heart is clouded with darkness and mind filled with doubt. Zexion quickly sees the perfect opportunity that has presented itself. Since Marluxia’s group is intent on using Sora, the hero of light, to overthrow the Organization, they would have their own hero, a hero of darkness. He sends Vexen to collect data on Riku in order to create a Riku Replica, which would be offered to Marluxia to use at his diposal, allowing them to infiltrate their base of operations and possibly disrupt their plans. By doing this, they could gain valuable information on the Replica Program by examining its’ behavior.

Unfortunately for Zexion, not all went as planned, as Vexen was disposed of by Axel who claims it was done to gain the trust of Marluxia and that he was on their side. Zexion then decides that the optimal path to recouping their loss would be for Lexaus to confront and persuade Riku to join them, using force if need be. Lexaus ultimately fails and is defeated by Riku, who was being controlled by Xehanort’s heartless.

While devising his next course of action, Axel appears and informs him of the inevitable passing of Marluxia at the hand of Sora. No longer seeing any value in Riku whatsoever, he finally reveals himself to him, planning to remove the guest that has worn out his welcome. He lures Riku to a makeshift Destiny Islands and pits him against the Darkside Heartless. When Riku is victorious, he talks down to him, claiming that he is lost in the sea of darkness and Sora’s light shines much too brightly for him to even get close.

He then implements his powers of illusion and under the guise of Sora, further states the helplessness of Riku’s position and drowns him in blinding light. Riku’s downfall is imminent until Naminé interferes and in the form of Kairi, advising Riku to accept the darkness within him becaue he has the potential to control it.

By doing this, the illusion disperses, and Zexion is left with no other choice but to face Riku in battle himself.

Riku eventually overcomes Zexion’s tricks and illusions and defeats him. Injured, Zexion retreats from the battle only to be greeted by Axel and the Riku Replica. Axel then advises the replica to kill Zexion, reasoning that he would grow in strength, thus bringing him one step closer to being stronger than the real Riku and becoming his own person. Although appalled by the suggestion, Zexion is taken out by the Replica before he can do anything about it and fades away to nothingness, claimed by the darkness he once plotted in.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

Minor Character

Zexion’s role in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days is relatively minor as he heads out to Castle Oblivion early on in the game. However, his role is still slightly larger that that of the other members who were sent with him. During the tutorial phase, Zexion teaches Roxas how to fill the mission gauge and pushes him to put maximum effort in the mission by filling it completely. Working for the good of the Organization is always at the forefront of Zexion's mind.

Zexion is mentioned later in the game as Axel returns from Castle Oblivion, being the sole survivor. He reports that he successfully eliminated Zexion to Saïx, who seems pleased with the outcome. This hints that his death was planned by Saïx, who wishes to move up in the Organization.

Zexion later makes a brief appearance in a bizarre dream of Xion’s, reenacting the moment when he and Riku faced off in Destiny Islands in Kingdome Hearts:Chain of Memories until the dream grows distorted and his voice fades away.
