Shimomura Speaks About Her Past With Famitsu
This month's edition of Famitsu magazine included a small booklet that contained an interview with Kingdom Hearts composer Yoko Shimomura.
According to the booklet, Shimomura started out learning music at a very early age and studied it during college, a job oppurtunity with Capcom presented itself and soon Shimomura's music was featured in games such as 'Street Fighter 2' and 'Breath of Fire'.
Shimomura found her creativity to be limited at Capcom and soon sought to compose music for the RPG (Role-playing game) genre, namely games at Square-Enix. Among 'Super Mario RPG' and 'Live A Live', Shimomura was given the oppurtunity to work on the Kingdom Hearts series.
"Kingdom Hearts had a heavy story, with themes of dark and light. Mr. Nomura told me, ‘I’d like pieces in the style of Verdi’s Requiem.’ And so, I wrote ‘Destati’, but at the time I wondered whether I hadn’t made a mistake, it being Disney and all."
The full interview can be found at Heartstation.org.
